Noble Friends,

On this day in 1478, King Edward IV had his brother George Plantagenet,
1st Duke of Clarence, executed for treason. In the dynastic struggle
known as the War of the Roses, Clarence switched from being a Yorkist to
the Lancaster side, and then back again, to bolster his own position.
Eventually Edward had enough of his mercurial brother, and had Clarence
offed. According to tradition, repeated by Shakespeare, Clarence was
drowned in a vat of malmsey wine, possibly at his own request. All the
family connections, and the changes of loyalty, make Clarence's part in
the War of the Roses so very confusing, but his unusual demise certainly
gives him considerable cachet:

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
