On this date in 1546, the noted Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was
born. Tycho would become the most advanced and accurate astronomer of
his time, though all his observations were made by naked eye. Some of
Tycho's theories and discoveries look absurd today, but he proved that
the moon orbited the earth, and that comets came from outside our

Tycho is famous for his prosthetic nose. He lost a good chunk of his
beak in a duel during is university days. His false nose was long
thought to be made of gold. A tissue sample studied when Tycho's body
was exhumed in 2010 suggested that the fabled phoney schnoz was
actually brass.
