Noble Friends, Especially Those With Dirt Under the Fingernails:

Today BBC Travel is exploring a very strange 16th-century Italian garden
known as the Sacro Bosco. The garden was built by Pier Francesco Orsini,
a famous soldier and arts patron. Unlike most well-ordered contemporary
gardens, the Sacro Bosco was left in a wild state, and is cluttered with
gigantic sculptures of monsters and grotesques. As such, it is more like
a fashionable 18th century English folly garden:

.

The mystery remains what Orsini was trying to say with his unusual
garden. In may ways it resembles some of Hieronymus Bosch's paintings,
and may have been a cautionary allegory about the spiritual perils and
eternal damnation. In any case, the garden remains to tantalize us.
Enjoy the photos and story.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
