On this date in 1580, Francis Drake (not yet knighted), sailed into 
Plymouth aboard the Golden Hind, having completed a three-year voyage 
around the world. He started with a fleet of five ships and 164 men, but 
only 59 remained. The voyage was filled with piracy, large amounts of 
Spanish treasure, exploration, and an English claim of territory in 
California. This would be enough adventure for most men, and was worth a
