Noble Friends,

October 9th is Leif Erikson Day in the United States. Curiously, this
date has nothing to do directly with the Viking explorer, but rather is
the date the ship RESTAURATION arrived with a boatload of immigrants in
New York from Norway in 1825:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restauration_(ship) .

But getting back to Leif, most of you know that he was an explorer and
son of Erik the Red, founder of the Islandic Viking colony on Greenland.
Leif is credited with exploring the eastern coast of North America and
founding settlements in a region he named Vinland about 500 years before
Columbus got all the credit. Leif wasn't the first Viking to land in
North America. That honor actually goes to Bjarni Herjólfsson, though he
actually did not make landfall:

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
