Noble Friends,

On this day in 1600 (Whew! Just made it into our period of interest),
the Republic of San Marino adopted its constitution:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Marino . San Marino is a 64
square-mile micro state entirely surrounded by Italy. It has been a
republic since 301.

San Marino is noted for its Crossbow Corps, a recognized unit of the
republic's tiny army, but made up entirely of volunteers whose sole
function seems to be to perform tourist exhibitions in medieval garb:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_San_Marino#The_Crossbow_Corps
(brief text) and http://www.federazionebalestrieri.sm (in Italian, but
with lots of really cool pictures).

For those of you interested in banners and flags, take note of how the
San Marino flag is tied to its pole in the opening photograph, a good
detail for us to remember.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
