Noble Friends,

On this day in 1478, George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, was executed 
for treason against his brother, King Edward IV. The mercurial and 
possibly mentally unstable Clarence had changed sides twice during the 
War of the Roses, and finally pushed is brother one step too far. 
Clarence was tried at the Tower with the King himself as his prosecutor, 
and Clarence was immediately offed. Tradition (and Shakespeare) claims 
he as was drowned in a vat of wine (possibly at his own request), 
certainly one of the more unusual state-sponsored demises of all time.
