Noble Friends,

On this date in 1422, King Henry V of England died of dysentery while on
campaign in France. After destroying much of the French nobility at the
Battle of Agincourt, marrying Catherine of Valois (daughter of the
French king Charles VI), and sidelining the Dauphin through the Treaty
of Troyes, Henry had nearly conquered France. Fate can be unkind, and it
certainly made a mess of English history at this point. The French were
able to renew their defensive war, the Burgundians dropped their
alliance with the English, Joan of Arc showed up to bolster the
Dauphin's claim to the throne, and Henry VI came to the English throne
as an infant and carrying the genetic madness that plagued his
grandfather Charles VI. How different history might have been had it not
been for a few naughty microbes!

Here is a brief biography of Henry V:

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
