Noble Friends,

Just in at the UVA Library: LANDESKNECHTE BEI HANS SACHS: ALTE UND NEUE
LANDSKNECHTSTECTE AUF EINBLATTDRUCKEN MIT HOLZSCHNITTEN edited by Hans
Blosen and Harald Pors (ISBN 9783503166169). Hans Sachs was a 16^th
century poet and meistersinger (and a character in Wagner’s DIE
MEISTERSINGER): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Sachs
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Sachs> . Among his many works were a
number of poems/songs celebrating the German Landesknechte soldiers.
These are collected in this volume. Of course, it is all in German,
which doesn’t do most of us any good. Ah, but there are pictures! Or
more properly period engravings, dozens of them, showing the
Landesknechtes’ fascinating costumes, armor, weapons, artillery, wagons,
and even their musical instruments. They are all in black and white, and
would be easy to photocopy for those working on late period German
costumes. And that, friends, is the real value of this book to us. This
piece will be impossible to find in bookstores, but you can have your
local library borrow it via interlibrary loan. Just take your librarian
the ISBN number above and they will do the rest.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot.
