Noble Friends,

On this date in 1283, Dafydd ap Gruffydd, Prince of Wales, was executed
by Edward I, completing (so the English king thought) his conquest of
Wales. Daffydd was done in by being hanged, disemboweled, beheaded, then
drawn and quartered. It is sometimes claimed that William Wallace's 1305
state-sponsored demise in this fashion was the first time this gruesome
punishment was inflicted. The Wikipedia article makes it clear that this
form of execution was already in used even before applied to Daffydd:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dafydd_ap_Gruffydd .

Grim stuff, but hey, history is history.

Edward faced another Welsh rebellion in 1294-1295 led by Madog ap
Llywelyn, a relative of Daffydd. It was serious, but minor compared to
the headaches he and his son Edward II would soon face in Scotland.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
