Noble Friends,

On this date in 793 Vikings raided the island priory of Lindisfarne off
the Northumbrian coast. This is generally accepted as the beginning of
the Viking conquest of England: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindisfarne
. The monks eventually fled Lindisfarne in 875, taking the relics of St.
Cuthbert with them. The current ruins are from a later Benedictine
priory founded in 1093. Lindisfarne also has a Tudor-era castle, and
remains an important tourist and modern pilgrimage site.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
