Noble Friends, Especially Costume Mavens:

New in the UVA Fine Arts Library: THE ROBERT LEHMAN COLLECTION AT THE
METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, Vol. 12, "European Sculpture and Metalwork"
by Frits Scholten (ISBN 9781588394415 or 9780691154893; our call number
N611 .L43 N48 1986 v.12). This book is a collection catalog, and
features aquamanilia, bronze sculpture, scupltures other than metal,
medals, plaquettes, various metalwork, and various metal objects. The
collection is mostly Italian, with some German work, from the 15th/16th
century. There are some more modern pieces. Nearly all objects are shown
in color. The aquamanilia are delightful water dispensers in the shape
fantastic animals or human heads. The metalwork section includes
tankards, boxes, jugs, urns, candle sticks, and other household items.
It was the section on medals which . . . uh . . . struck me as most
useful to Scadians. The majority of the medals show busts in profile.
It's all about the hats, which are excellently rendered and could serve
as models for reproduction headgear. Naturally there is an extensive
bibliography, and a complete index to this volume.

Other volumes in this series which might interest Scadians include
Italian Paintings (v. 1.); Fifteenth to Eighteenth Century European
Paintings (v. 2.); Illuminations (v. 4.); Italian Fifteenth-Seventeenth
Century Drawings (v. 5);and Fifteenth to Eighteenth Century European
Drawings (v. 6.).

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
(aka Garth Groff, UVA Library Cataloging and Metadata Services Dept.)
