Sir Theron -
More than anything I was asking for a peek 'behind the scenes...' What is the process in bringing a person to the point where the Crown would ask for a polling? I can assume that the Crown wouldn't publicly ask for such a polling if there was any real doubt as to the outcome...
I know there is the 'apprenticeship' concept (red-belts, etc...) But is it a performance issue ('I put my time in...') or an ability ('I got mad skills...') or a temperament ('I can do that...') or some mystical summation of all three?
Corwyn (apologies, I can't recall the correct title right now...) described the 'polling' as a process of the current members submitting their thoughts/comments on the suitability of the candidate. What makes a person suitable? I know that a term like 'continued excellence beyond the norm' is a good description but not really explanatory...
I also know that there is a desirable attitude for Peers to have (thanks to Mistress Molly for her thoughts!), but is that all it is?
I think if I understood the process leading up the the investiture ceremony (thank you to Baron Otto for such an excellent description of that aspect!) more fully I would be able to formulate a more precise question...
