[MR] Magna Carta Sealed This Day in 1215

Noble friends,

On this date in 1215, King John of England set his seal to the _Magna 
Carta_ at "rushy Runneymede". It was a reluctant assent, and both he and 
the Pope repudiated the charter ("The nerve of those barons!"). Although 
the laws set down in the _Magna Carta_ were modified many times 
throughout history, and only three clauses remain in effect in Great 
Britain, as a symbolic document it forms the basis of English and United 
States law.
