Noble Friends,

New at UVA Clemons Library: MEDIEVAL CLOTHING AND TEXTILES, vol. 7,
edited by Robin Netherton and Gale R. Owen Crocker (ISBN 9781843836254,
our call number GT575 .M434 2011). This is a book of six contributed
scholarly articles on a variety of topics: "The Empress' New Clothes: A
Rotulus Pannorum of Isabella, Sister of King Henry III . . . " by Benjam
L. Wild; "Unveiling Social Fashion Patterns: A Case Study of Frilled
Veils in the Low Countries (1200-1500)" by Isis Sturtewagen; "What is
the Pearl-Maiden Wearing, and Why?" by Kimberly Jack; "'Hys Surcote Was
Ouert', The 'Open Surcoat' in Late Medieval British Texts" by Mark
Chambers; "London Merchants' Cloth Exports, 1350-1500" by Eleanor
Quinton and John Oldland; and "Laboreria Sete: Design and Production of
Lucchese Silks in the Late Fourteenth and Early fifteenth Centuries" by
Christine Meek. This is great stuff, particularly the articles on veils
and the Pearl-Maiden, both of which are well illustrated and show great
detail in the costume pieces. Of course there are the usual
bibliographical references, as well as a contents list of the previous
seven volumes (which, sadly, my library does not have, but they are no
doubt available through interlibrary loan). This volume is a really
useful resource for SCA costume mavens.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
(aka Garth Groff, UVA Cataloging and Metadata Services Dept.)
