I visited Plimoth Plantation and their very impressive gift shop in the week
after the Known World Heraldic Symposium in Rhode Island.
They do indeed have quite a few things from the grey area that were
tantalizing (and which bent my credit card a bit!).
One thing that was not mentioned was the special line of Plimoth Plantation
Worsted knitting yarn that is spun exclusively for the Plantation by
Harrisville Designs. The colors in this line of yarns which was introduced
less than a year ago are scrumptious and all are based on colors produced in
the early seventeenth century using natural dyestuffs. (I had a fascinating
discussion with one of the staff members who was involved in the research on
the colors and in color matching the naturally dyed fleeces and spun yarn to
the yarn produced by Harrisville!) It is not the cheapest yarn there is,
but it is a rather nice option for those of us who do not dye or spin (or
cannot do so because of mundane circumstances). I picked up some and am
contemplating several felted Tudor caps. . .

Subject: [MR] Plimoth Plantation Gift Shop Books
Noble Friends,
While looking for thimbles online, I stumbled onto the Plimoth
Plantation gift shop site. While most of their stuff is modern, or at
least 17th century, they offer a fair number of books which might be
useful to us: http://www.plimoth.com/books-media . There are several
titles on life in Elizabethan England, a couple on Shakespeare,
cookbooks which might have recipes that can be backdated to our time,
and some general books on costumes and firearms which cover our period
and later eras. There are also some possibilities among the toys and
houseware sections. And yes, they have ring thimbles too.
Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, Who Hopes to See Many of You at the Wars Next Week
