Noble Friends, and Especially Fellow Scots,

One 23 August 1305 Sir William Wallace was executed on the orders of
King Edward I of England for treason. Sir William was doomed to a
particularly nasty death: hanged, disemboweled, then drawn and quartered
and beheaded. Edward threw in a few extra tortures as a bonus. Contrary
to popular belief, this gruesome death was not especially devised for
Wallace. A Welsh prince had already been despatched in this manner
several years before.

You can read about Wallace at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wallace

The two Edinburgh statues showing him in mail with a great sword are
rather plain, but still pretty good representations of how a normanized
Scottish knight would have looked in full battle dress at the time--much
the same kit as an English knight would have worn. The Aberdeen statue
and the stained glass image show a two-handed broadsword that wasn't
seen in Scotland until the early 15th century.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, A Proud Scot
