[MR] Battle of Gravelines--Spanish Armada

Noble friends,

That is, those of you who aren't at Pennsic! August 8 is the anniversary 
of the Battle of Gravelines, the final major naval engagement by the 
English against the Spanish Armada. The battle was fought off the coast 
of Flanders. Following the break-up of the Armada's crescent formation 
by Drake's fire ships near Calais, the Spanish moved north to Flanders 
to regroup. Lightning attacks against the Spanish fleet did major damage 
to the galleons and smaller ships. Although the English only destroyed 
five Spanish ships, the attack forced the Spanish into the North Sea and 
the deadly voyage around Scotland and Ireland where many of the Armada's 
crippled ships were driven ashore by gales.
