Something similar happened in our encampment many years back.  In mid-afternoon, 
the man on fire duty placed tinder and kindling on the ashes of the previous 
night's fire and went to get his matches.  While he was away, I noticed smoke coming
from the laid fuel and by the time he returned, it was fully aflame.  The ashes appeared
cold and dead, but there were embers in there that apparently were jarred into life by 
putting the fresh fuel upon it.
