Stephen Lawhead's the Pendragon Cycle maybe?

That came out starting in the late 1980's and was pretty "well known"  It
is a very non-fantasy/magical version of the events of King Authur. Think
it's only 6 books though.  It's been a while since I read it so I may be
wrong.
