<<< With all courtesy, I generally agree with your statements. At the
same
time, whenever I run up against somebody in the society who wants to
make me feel small so they can feel important, somebody who takes on an
office and then is too busy to do their job when I ask for their help
(my biggest beef), or some arbitrary rule which feels like a snub, then
I wonder why I'm here. >>>
And
<<< If our organization makes some people feel less than
special, then they won't continue to play for very long. Just ask some
folks who are no longer here why they left. I contend it is essential
for the SCA to balance our elitist fantasies with the hard reality of
real-life egos. >>>
While I agree with the first, I'm not sure that the last is true. I'm
not sure how many people have stopped playing the SCA game because
they stopped getting more baubles but I guess I do know a few. But I
know a lot more folks who continue to put in long hours month after
month, year after year, and they have gotten little recognition for
it. It's hard to believe they are doing this for those baubles.
On yet another hand, I have run across a few Peers and Nobles, and
unfortunately, a King, who let getting those baubles go to their head
and think that this made anyone of lower rank their inferior and
treated them that way.
If you are feeling abused by the "system" or the "Nobles" or whatever,
I would recommend reading this following article. It was posted on an
SCA list recently and I was so impressed by what was said that I added
it to the Florilegium. More than once, I've decided I've had enough
of the politics and mean-spiritedness of some folks in this group and
decided to leave. In the end, I haven't. So read this, consider
whether you want to let these folks get to you, or whether you really
do find more good in this Society than pain.
