The "rumored reason" is that someone with a royal coronet (duchy, county, landed 
baronage) didn't receive enough respect while wearing their coronet because the 
court baronage coronets were bigger and shinier than theirs
 
 
My experience with rumors in the SCA is that they rarely touch the truth.  

Has an official reason been given?  Because I'm not seeing the need for this 
change.
