[MR] opinions on peerage

Hoping my opinion doesn't open any more cans of worms.....

  Yes, in period some were knighted for service, etc but they did not have  the Pelican or Laurel to help with such distinctions. I think in this way it  makes the Peerage more personal ( and  accurate as to why they are elevated) to those that receive them.
