[MR] Disturbing compliments

I’ve been a Society member for 35 years and became Court Baron almost
twenty years ago. I got that accolade for the service I had done the
previous fifteen years. I was never dedicated enough to be thought of
for the Golden Dolphin, let alone Pelican, but Court Baron suited me
just fine. Much of that service was parking control. With the Baronial
Coronet on it has always amazed me that arguments about where to park
or who parks where are drastically reduced. That coronet and $5 gets
me a good coffee, but it somehow makes my directions have a greater
weight.

At Storvik’s Novice Tourney this weekend five people approached me and
congratulated me on doing parking lot control all day long. I
sincerely thank these people. It was an ego boost... but it also was
appalling. Appalling because of the second half of their compliment.
They were amazed that someone who had just recently stepped down from
the high position of Territorial Baron would do such a lowly job.

Is that what The Dream has come to? Hold a high office and be excused
from ever doing low profile work ever again. It is a sad day if this
has become the norm. I pray it has not.
