If you know a storm is coming and you plan on staying.. and know there is a
chance to lose power, one of the best things to do prior for being able to
flush your toilets... is fill your bathtub with water before the storm
hits.. then keep a small pale nearby to help flush. If your tub's drain plug
doesn't work well.. I say first fix it.. but if you can't, then use a cooler
or even those metal large buckets people use to put ice in for beer and soda
hehe. No need for making purchases when most homes already have tubs. Just
plan ahead.. same thing for your fridge..
if you have an ice maker, then bag in ziploc bags ahead of time, as much ice
as you can. This way, if power goes out, you can use the bagged ice to help
keep the fridge part cool or use it in coolers for food.
For water.. if you aren't evacing.. don't go out and buy tons of bottled
water.. just prefill your empty plastic milk jugs, and any other empty drink
containers like from juices and such, that you haven't already thrown out.
I do recommend people go to walmart or similar stores and get one or more of
those collapsable water containers.. in the sporting goods section. They
come in 1gal and 2 gal sizes as well. Most people here probably do modern
camping as well as medieval.. and might already own a coleman stove.. if
not, they aren't real expensive.. so get one for next time and keep a few of
those small propane canisters for them around. Then you can still cook food
if power is out and you don't have a gas stove.
Just a few ideas for people to think about for next time.
