With all due respect... it is political campaign posturing... notice that we
all knew Katrina was a cat 4/5 while still offshore... then there was Ivan
and Ike and Wilma and (fill in the blank).
Please remember if you do leave.. take photos of your house as it IS now...
lots of photos... and video if you have that capability... it will help you
fight your insurance company when the time comes.. please to note, that
after katrina the flood insurance wanted to deny saying the it was wind
damage and normal insurance refused to pay off saying it was water damage.
BE prepared to fight and if you don't have to... be ecstatic.
next if you are in a flood zone.. and have something that IS irreplaceable
and have the ability to take it with you..do so... make sure you have papers
that cannot be easily replaced.. use ziploc gallon freezer bags to put
stuff in like papers and documents that you want to keep safe.. Hefty makes
those "big bags"
tape on your windows is a waste... but if it makes you feel better do so...2
inch wide blue painterts tape you can use inside to seal off windows so that
water does not make it in. We use it to seal windows on a sailboat
offshore.. and it works..
I grew up on the Gulf Coast... been thru a lot of Big Storms (hurricanes) as
the Seminole call them... let me offer some trips and tricks we use.
oil lamps are pretty in the house.. thrift stores carry them.. grab a half
gallon of oil twice a month during the yr so you have a supply. a couple of
big bottles of citronella oil.. put one in an oil lamp it is smelly but in a
house with NO a/c and doors open it keeps the biting critters to a dull
roar.
you really do not need electricity you can make it witout it.. your
ancestors did...
however.... IF you have a stand alone freezer you can give yourself a few
extra days... top shelf in my freezer has two 20lbs blgs of ice that are
never used.. the chest would get me filling garbage bags with water and then
letting them freeze ontop of whatever was in the freezer like a blanket.. IF
the elec goes out..you take duct tape and seal your parts that have the
rubber seal on it and then wrap the freezer in a blanker, comforter or
two..the object is to give you a few extra days to keep the items from
spoiling to fast.. Home depot caries thos small red buckets, we have always
kept 4 or 6 in the chest freezer for fishing.. speaking of which.. if you
have access to dry ice, get your pennsic cooler out, and remove food from
the freezer you want a few days from now when th elights are out... put it
in there and cover that with a blanket and put it in a dark very cool
place.
about cooking..
do you have an asian store nearby?? try to find a single burner butane stove
with a 4 pak of butane. make all food a one pot dish.
Eggs can last up to three weeks with no refrigeration... most ppl never
think to great 3 or 4 dozen for a hurricane.. mayo that you buy OFF the
shelf will NOT spoil if it is not refrigerated.. never ever stick anything
in it that is not a fresh spoon or knife..
If you have to heat water for something.. warm some eggs up and gently slide
them into a prewarmed wide mouth thermos... pour the boiling water over them
and cover.. let sit for however. at least ten mintues. .you can pop a tea
bag or two for tea and boiled eggs. Ramen noodles can also be cooked that
way.. the idea is to conserve fuel and water.
Bleach.. get a couple of bottles.. a few drops of bleach in a gallon of
water will purify it.. what most do not realize that bleach biodegrades in
about 24 hrs. bleach is a cheap means to disinfect a lot of stuf... 1 oz in
a dishpan of water while washing dishes is a better antibacterial than anti
bacterial soap and you never get immune to it as you do the soap.
Got a sunshower for pennsic or camping.. fill it and sit it outside now.. I
can take a bath and wash my shoulder length hair in a quart of water.. it
comes from yrs of sailing and having a limited water supply.
I know a lot more tricks.. but those will get you thru the first days...
make sure you have, at minimum, 3 days of food and water.. better go for 7
days.. for drinking figure a gallon of water/day per person.. drinking, not
bathing.. plastic ziploc bags on anything you can that you wish to keep dry
is a great thing.. esp a couple of changes of clothes.. rubbermaid stuff
too. and then blue painters tape the edges.. it is great stuf and unlike
ductape does not leave lthat sticky residue and is pretty tough.
my prayers to all who are in harms way that the lady keeps you safe from
harm.

Love never claims, it ever gives; love never suffers, never resents, never
revenges itself. Where there is love there is life; hatred leads to
destruction. ~ Mahatma Gandhi ~
