Folks, I own and/or moderate a couple boards, notably SCA Gypsy, plus I am on the mod team of a large international board that has something like five thousand or so members from every corner of the English speaking word (including English speaking members in countries where they don't speak English.)
SCA boards are easy. They hardly need anything, beyond a little spam control and the extremely rare suggestion that members play fair (ie no trolling, no spam, and no insults directly aimed at other members). SCA posters can not hide behind the anonymity of the internet. People who act badly on SCA boards don't get off scott free the way they do on general boards. So the behavior is better.
Even here.
A little debate here and there is good for any community, in my opinion. Lets us hash out what we thing, why we think it, and gives us a little food for thought. Keeps us plugged into the community mindset.
If you think this is a nasty place to hang out...well...all I can say is you ain't been out of the Tavern near enough. This is Romper Room. The non-sca board I mentioned, where people can hide behind screen names and distance take a whole team of mods just to keep it nice. I had to tell someone over there to tone it down just last night. This board does a great job of self-policing. Just because someone comes out with an opinion or a statement that you don't agree with, that's not a hanging offense.
And anyways, it's a Tavern. In Cheapside. The climate ought to be a little below the salt. ;-)
