Being accepting is a great thing.

I get more attention by sitting in the A&S/feast hall or under a friend's
day shade working my craft. People wander by and we talk.

Heh, I'm also a weird duck - when I go out to eat by myself, I frequently
drag research along with me. I get asked questions about it (namely "Are
you in college?") and then talk about the SCA. I also have business cards
made up to hand out with my contact info!

The meetup I run has a hit or miss on attendance - we've had more folks
since we moved it from a restaurant to a member's home where we actually
engage in the work we love! Having something low key for newcomers to show
up at is a great way to get their interest and test the waters before
committing to an all day thing where they have to wear 'funny clothes'.

Just my two tuppence!
