I used to live in Bangor, Maine. Because of what happened to the Vietnam vets, local groups made sure that EVERY plane returning from the Gulf (first war) that landed in Bangor (which was a jumping off site for troop transport because it had been a B-52 base) had a welcoming committee....folks shook the hand of EVERY person getting off of the plane and there was food/drink and sometimes music provided for the flights....regardless of time of day or season. Sadly in a way, it's still going on for flights returning from the Gulf.
