Attendance for voluntary hobby/fun/vacation activities is down across the
board all over the country.
Bad economic times cause that. Costs are going up for everything and wages
are flat or falling, plus the unemployment rate is, what, 10% or so.
Some folks went from being a two income family to a one income family. Free
events 6 hours away are still too expensive for most folks in that
situation.
A low cost alternative to "an official event" is an unofficial day party in
a public park. Renting a pavilion for a day is often less than $100. Do a
cookout and a pot-luck dinner and an impromptu crafts show, workshop, or
both, plus a fighter practice.
The cost is virtually nill and it's lots of fun for everyone that attends.
Ask for volunteers to provide crash space ahead of time, for those
adventurous enough to come from farther away.
