Your Grace,

Respectfully, I've been in those meetings as well. Generally the
reason for the applause is that it means some of the Branch
expenditures for the year were covered or at least that much more
within reach.

For example, my Branch has a well attended fighter practice. It is
also VERY expensive to run. While we put out a can for donations the
money taken in does not even cover half of the expense. We generally
run two camping events a year plus 1 or 2 daytrip events (depending on
the year). Of those events the profit comes from the camping events
and some years they don't produce much of a "profit".

So when an event comes close to covering a significant portion of the
fighter practice costs we applaud. When one doesn't we wince. But
how much the Branch needs isn't determined just by how much it costs
to run the "next" event or even the events for the year. I don't
consider that we've made a profit until we can start thinking about
expenses beyond our fixed expenses, including that practice site.

So before you judge a group for celebrating a high EVENT profit, think
about what other non event expenses they have...it might just mean
people are celebrating that the books for the year are going to
balance.

YIS,

Orla
