Noble friends,

This morning we received THE LIMBOURG BROTHERS, REFLECTIONS ON THE
ORIGINS AND THE LEGACY OF THREE ILLUMINATORS FROM NIJMEGEN edited by Rob
Duckers and Pieter Roelofs (ISBN 9789004175129; our call # Fine Arts
ND3170 .L56 L57 2009). Herman, Paul, and Jean de Limbourg were noted as
illuminators, and worked on the BELLES HEURES and the TRES RICHES HEURES
DU DUC DE BERRY. Their work is considered among some of the finest 15th
century illuminations, and is noted for its vibrant colors and rich
detail, especially on the clothes. This book summarizes a 2005
exhibition of the brothers' work presented at Museum Het Valkhol in
their home city of Nijmegen. It consists of a number of scholarly
articles which describe the Limbourg Brothers work, and its cultural and
artistic context. The book is illustrated with many, many brilliantly
colored reproductions of their paintings (though a bit small), as well
as the work of others who were influenced by the Limbourgs' art. If you
are an illuminator, an early 15th century costume maven, or just love
medieval art, this book is well worth searching out. If you can't locate
this book (try Interlibrary Loan), there are several editions of the
TRES RICHES HEURES, available, which have larger versions of the
illustrations.

Kind regards,

Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
(mka Garth Groff, UVA Libraries cataloger)
