Good evening!

Listed below is the class schedule for A&S classes to be held this weekend
at Sapphire.  Immediately following the schedule is the information on the
classes themselves.  If you have any questions about what is in this email,
please contact the A&S coordinator, THL Brianna O'Dinneeen (thlbrianna AT

Saturday:

10 AM: *SCA Sign Language & Deaf History in Period (2 hours)*

11 AM: *The Anatomy of an A&S Competition (1 hour)*

12 PM: *Wire Weaving (1 hour)*

1-2 PM: *Judging A&S Competitions in Atlantia (2 hours)*

3-4:30 PM: *Mead 101 (1.5 hours)*



Time to be Determined:  Cooking with Sir TJ

2 PM: *Pilgrim Bags (1.5 hours)*


Class Descriptions:

*Pilgrim Bags*

 Instructor: Cairistonia                                    *Length: 1.5
hours*

Basket not holding all of your personal effects at events?  Ever thought
about using a Pilgrim's Bag instead? You can carry and hide those non-period
items.  Bonus: Both hands are now free. (And you don't have to go to
Jerusalem!)  Directions available on how to make a bag; bring paper to make
a pattern.

This style of bag is based on "A Pilgrim's Alms Satchel" from the 11th
Century.



*SCA Sign Language                                     Length 2 hours *

*& Deaf History in Period                              Limit:  15*

Instructor: Lady Gabrielle Sen del - “Cindel” (mka: Nanci M. Head –
Interpreter for the Deaf – VQAS Cert.)



During the first part of the class, participants will have the opportunity
to learn through a Deaf Timeline, the history of Deaf people in the Middle
Ages.  The second part of the class will be “hands up” with a focus on SCA
specific signs: i.e. Kingdoms, Baronies, Awards, Orders, People, etc.  All
participants will receive a handout and a DVD “100 SCA Signs”  *Cost: $3.00
(to cover cost of handout and dvd's)*



*Wire Weaving*

*Intro to Sekanjabins and Jalabs                       Length:  1 Hour*

Instructor: Lady Aldyth the Gentle                     *Limit:  12*

Hands-on course. We will make enough sekanjabin during class for
participants to take home. $2 contributions welcome for materials.  Course
will review the history of sekanjabins and jalabs, traditional recipes, and
a hand-out with all the information.



*Mead 101,* *or Everything You Want To          Length:  1 Hour*

*Know About Making Your First Mead           Limit:  10*

Instructor: Lady Sorcha Prechan

Not a demonstration class, but a talk through of the basics. There might
even be samples!



*The Anatomy of an A&S Competition*            *Length:  1 Hour*

Instructor:  Countess Adelicia of Cumbria          *Limit:  25*

A discussion on some of the ins and outs of A&S Competitions with special
emphasis on display techniques and other survival skills. We will talk about
what are the necessary items to have to have a truly competitive piece as
well as some of the tricks and traps of A&S competitions.



*Judging A&S Competitions in Atlantia           Length:  2 Hours*

Instructor:  Countess Adelicia of Cumbria          *Limit:  21*

A discussion on judging A&S competitions. The class will examine some of the
dos and don’ts for judging as well as techniques to provide the best
response to a entrant on each piece. The class will divide up and judge an
actual piece of art and then come back to discuss the results.

Other A&S Information:

*Competitions:*  Best use of the Sapphire Gem, Best interpretation of
Baronial Medallion (all medallions will become the property of Their
Excellencies of Caer Mear).  We will also have a brewing competition as
well.  The categories for this competition are Beers and Ales, Meads and
wines and a special category for best use of the Sapphire Gem in your
presentation.



*Open Display*: There is an Open Display for any gentle wishing to receive
commentary or just interested in showing their latest A&S project.

*A&S Gathering point for artisans*:  shade will be provided for artisans to
come and spend some time together.  (You will not be required to spend the
