[MR] 4th Peerage

When I was new to Society, I was told that knights were more than just good
with a stick. They had to do arts, they had to learn to dance. It is a
whole package. Current peers usually start to become so by being a
squire/apprentice/protégé etc. It involves a teacher, research, practice, a
household, and more.

I dislike characterizations of one form of excellence being harder than
another. Somehow that besmirches our strive for chivalry. I have know MoLs
that prefer the Rapier lists because “they are more polite and respect me
more.” I disagree with the characterization. I have only had problems with
one or two individuals. My problem with them had nothing to do with their
fighting form. I think we like to put people in categories or “boxes” way to
quickly.

I think the perception of peerage having more power has a counter causality.
(The first time I have used that expression since being on debate teams. :o
) I think the polling to the peers is because most of them have been very
active for a long period of time. They are often in households and have lots
of contacts with people in settings where they can be exposed to more ideas
and opinions. Then there’s the vow of fealty. They have vowed to serve the
best interests of the Kingdom and Society. They should honor a request from
the crown to share their opinions. I think this is the reasoning behind the
requests of the BoD to the crown.

I do have a request of my own to this list. If you have an opinion, it needs
to be heard. The list is not the place for this. Put it in writing on paper
and put it in the mail. The crown and the BoD need these more than quick
replies on the list. Also, it is somewhat like politicians getting letters
in that one letter statically represents 12 others of that opinion. An
personal e-mail much less as with comments on an e-list. Hand written notes
are even more understood as someone having a strong conviction.
