That's not at all how I remember it.  Beginning the process to go kingdom after two years was openly discussed by both Royal Peers and committee members, well after all the previous posturing of remaining Atlantia.  When that occurred, people south of you realized they had a bunch of smoke blown up their houpelandes. :)

The official reason the movement failed was lack of interest.  I say it now, and I have said it since then, that we should keep talking about it so that we don't miss the correct time for it.  I have always seen it as something of an inevitability.

So, let's keep talking, but let's try really hard not be unintentional revisionists.  That will breed mistrust in the whole process and make it, as has already been said, much more painful than it should be.
