Pleasant Greetings Tavern -
It seems the folks at Winsor Newton have done artists using watercolor
pigments a small favor. For a short while, they have brought back the
historic color of Smalt Blue (also know as Dumont's Blue). This color was
apparently discontinued in the mid 1800's due to problem obtaining the raw
materials. Now it is back for a short while as part of their 175 yr.
celebration and they are giving it away (with watercolor purchases). I
recently stumbled on a free tube at the local Utrecht's store, and I must
say it is an interesting color. It is more to the French Ultramarine side,
but with purplish undertones. Since the pigment is a sodium aluminum
silicate base (heated glass) it rates quite well for being lightfast.
Historically this is a color typically used in the Mediterranean area, that
has it roots in Egyptian Blue. So go for it, grab a tube or two while you
can, cause according to the WN website, there will be no more when it is
gone.
