This is a wonderful effort and it is great to see folks from the SCA working
together for such a great cause. I would also point out that you have the
opportunity to do something similar, and for a similarly great cause right
in your own communities. Every spring/summer, the American Cancer Society
sponsors a Relay for Life in many communities across the United States. The
ACS funds research for prevention, treatment and cures for every form of
cancer, sponsoring efforts both on the local level and national. The
researchers that are funded are those who are just starting out who can't
really get funding from major pharmaceutical companies. Often these people
go on to make major contributions to the field, witness the fact that in the
60+ years that the ACS has been funding research, 42 grantees have won Nobel
prizes for their work...work which has included breakthroughs like
mammograms and many of the drugs used to treat cancers.

The Relay for Life is a team event that happens, usually, over a Friday
night into a Saturday morning...and it is as much a celebration of life as
it is a fundraising event. We remember those who have lost their fight to
cancer, celebrate with those who have survived, and raise money, along with
teaching folks how to avoid this disease.

It's a wonderful time...I've been involved for the past 8 years or so,and
our Barony participated as a team for several years.

To get involved, go to http://www.relayforlife.org. There you can find out
about a relay in your local area. If you don't want to get involved
personally, send me an email and I'll direct you to my personal page where
you can donate to the Relay for Life for Calvert County.

There are many people in Atlantia...probably many in your local group...who
have been touched by cancer. We have a number of wonderful folk who are
currently fighting this disease. For example, I know of at least 4 people
in our small Barony who have either had cancer or who have had family
members who have. So...take a few minutes, look at the Web site, and
consider participating.

Kiri (three-time survivor!)
