  As long as you are not using the SCA name you do not need to run
the money into the SCA accounts first and then transfer it to another
501c3. If the professor has a 501c3 that can accept the money. Then you
can raise it with the SCA name and make a donation. But the money would 
go  Person --> SCA --> SCA account --> another 501C3 --> 501 account


  Now as a concerned group of individuals you may collect money and use
it as you will. Just make sure if it is private that you are not 
collecting the money using the SCA name (or name of official branches etc)
