Here's my tuppence on the matter - do both.  Put the 'short form'
piece, a page long, RIGHT in front where judges can't miss it -
reference page material in your supporting docs as necessary
(especially pictures).

I did this with a coral necklace I did, that was, oh, 1450 I think (or
thereabouts) - the only thing I forgot was the portrait I'd
referenced! (what a 'D'oh' moment that was) BUT - I won short form
documentation that day :)

It was explained to me that short form usually answers the 5 questions
of "what, who, when, where, how and why" and then you can get as
encyclopedic as necessary once you've answered that.

Honestly, I think there needs to be more 'training' for judges, even
for normal folks who come into the SCA with at least some knowledge of
some of the arts - this is what brings them into the game in the first
place, yes?  I took a "So you want to be a Judge" 4 years ago - and
I've only recently judged in the last 2.  But then, my subjects of
interest aren't widely displayed either.
