[MR] Poppies & Veteran's Day

I used to keep them, like a bouquet, in a little cut-glass vase. I think I
had a dozen or so. One of my cats, as a kitten, pretty well decimated them.
This does bring back memories - I haven't seen those poppies in so long,
that I, too, thought they'd quit doing them.

Ah, you're dredging up memories long forgotten! My father was an Air force
vet, and I remember, as a small child, always going to the VFW and getting
these little red flowers (fake, unfortunately), with a wired stem, that we'd
stick through a button hole of our shirt. I never knew what they were
about, of course, being way too young to understand, at least at first.

By the time I was old enough to understand, he'd either stopped doing it, or
stopped bringing me along, I don't know which, since I don't have teenage
memories of those flowers.

After all this time, it's nice to finally know what they were for.
