fair enough and yes i wasn't at that meeting. im glad to know the question
was asked though. and, as you know, i demand a lot more than fighting
mastery from my students before i will see them as a brother knight. of
course i dont think there was any doubt about either sir sinclairs service
and art nor sir kaels. i guess im still a little torn when it comes to
asking what laurel and pelican candidates have done for the army. i think
we get so many perks as fighters that it seems a little unfair to expect a
pelican, for example, to have served us in any form. i mean what if he/she
spends all their time assisting cooks or children? little time will be had
for the army directly but are not these services equally as important? and
yes, it could be weakly argued that watching a single fathers child or
feeding him at the end of the day are services to the army. not a good
enough argument to convince me though.
i agree that most of our peers (sca) are certainly well rounded individuals.
i cook, woodwork, heraldry, paint, metalwork, etc. but so do most knights
in some way. and the service and arts peerages are equally as well rounded.
but i think most people that actually care about the sca and have been
around it for more than a few years are the same whether they are masters at
any of it or not.
anyway, just some thoughts.

I'm sorry Your Grace, but I have to disagree. We
discussed those aspects at the last chiv meeting I
attended at Unevent. I know you weren't in attendance,
and I agree that at some of the meetings in the very
short time that I have been a knight, these matters
have not been discussed, but they have happened once
or twice.
Now, to be fair, it isn't 'does this person play
chess, or do they sing?' rather, it is 'is this a
well-rounded canidiate?' Do they serve the kingdom,
the society? Do they know anything about thier time
period and persona? What arts do they do?
I think you will agree with me, that it is very, very
hard to name more than a handful of knights that
haven't at least some experience with some medival
skill. You yourself have done woodworking, painting,
and the like, much as I have. Most of the knights have
these skills, and personally, I think it is only
proper that they gain them if they are to one day run
a SCA household, liken to the excellent one you have.
As to your comment about the other Peerages, yes there
is one crazy SOB that has asked that question before
(What have they done for the army?/What is there
experience of the fighting arts?) and was rounded
criticized for it. Oh well. I still believe it is
unfair that the question isn't asked of one peerage
and not the other, equal ones, so I continue to ask
it. A knight/peer must champion what they think is
right, no?
As has been stated by others, while the other 5-10% of
what a canidiate brings to the table (non-fighting)
might have different values for different knights, I
know that personally, I have my own standards of what
I expect from my vassals. They can either meet those,
or I will joyously release them to serve someone that
doesn't require such stern accomplishments. :-)
Kind regards,
byram
