Hi, all. I hate my first post here to be such a downer, but this was bound
to happen. We are not teaching our newbies our ways, and now we are losing
sites. I complained about the issue of garbage left behind at sites by our
own members years ago. A decade ago, an event would go on at a site, and
come Sunday afternoon, you couldn't even tell anyone had used the site. They
were literally in better shape than before we used them.

It's a very rare thing that I am on a site on Sunday. I haven't stayed over
on a site since the baby was born. However, on the very rare occasions that
I am, I find myself walking around with a handful of butts, which frankly
angers me as I neither smoke nor litter. Cleaning up after people who do
both isn't a fun way to spend a Sunday morning. Especially when you consider
SCAdians are supposed to be better than that. I live about 10 miles aways
from the Girl Scout camp Unicorn was held at, so I came back Sunday morning.
Picked up quite a number of gross butts out of the flower beds around the
troll building and campfire area, as well as the light woods between that
area and the tourneyfield. Found some candy wrappers, crepe ribbons, cig
boxes, cellophane, plastic bags, etc as well. What's up with that?

It used to be smoking took place out of the way and out of sight, in a
designated place. Now, apparently it's okay to puff away crowded in the
doorway to the feast hall, and toss the butts right on the ground. No wonder
the Boy Scouts have a sour taste in their mouths about it.

We say we need new members. I would argue that no, we don't. Not if we
aren't going to bother to teach the ones we have our ways.

On a lighter note, Richard, have your newbie check out www.pennsic.net.
That's Alexander's Pennsic Page, a very good site with some nice pics of
garb (and everything else!) in the photo album section.

Sorry to be such a wet blanket here. It's been bugging me a long time.
