That's a good point. I judged my first A&S competition (poetry) at
Challenge of the Heart this past weekend, and every last entry came from
someone I know personally. Perhaps at a larger competition or one outside
the judge's home barony, only a fraction of the entries will come from
someone they know, but it's likely that a few will, at least part of the
time. However, I think anyone who's going to judge needs to be able to set
aside any personal feelings towards the entrants and judge based on the
merits of the entry. And it's up to the judge's own integrity to determine
whether or not they can do that--it probably depends on the individual. I
would be unwilling to judge a contest that my husband was entering, for
example, but don't think I'd be biased if the entrant were simply a friend.
