This is really bad news. That little pest has been a problem here in a small part of Maryland. Southern Storvik has been "quarantined" as well due to the EAB. As a park ranger who's seen what it can do, I really hope they get it out of there. I know in this area, it came from Michigan, through Tenessee...sorta. Check out http://www.dnr.state.md.us/dnrnews/infocus/emerald_ash_borer.asp if you're from the DC area for more info. It makes me wonder if that's the same way it got to those counties. It should probably be said that it's not just suggested that you don't bring firewood in from outside OR take it from at the end of Pennsic home with you, it's actually illegal. If I remember correctly, the nursery in Michigan that sent the trees to Maryland got a pretty hefty fine, and I think he got put out of business, b/c he sold those trees with the knowledge of the infestation. Hopefully this gives everyone an idea of how serious Natural Resources authorities are about
this problem. Feel free to crosspost to other kingdom lists, or to anyone you know who's going to Pennsic. As a result, the PA Dept of Agriculture has banned import or export of live ash trees or any firewood into the area around Pennsic. The article can be found at: _http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07179/797791-113.stm_ (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07179/797791-113.stm) >From the story: "State officials yesterday banned the transportation of ash trees and firewood into or out of Allegheny, Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties after an emerald ash borer -- a tiny green beetle from Asia -- was discovered in a tree in Cranberry. ~snip~ Because of the difficulty in
distinguishing between species of firewood, campers are being asked to use only locally harvested firewood, which should all be burned on-site and not carried to new locations. All types of hardwood firewood, including ash, oak, maple and hickory, are considered quarantined." ~gise************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.========================================================================The Merry Rose Tavern at CheapsideList Info: http://merryrose.atlantia.sca.org/Submissions: Atlantia at atlantia.sca.orgSubscriptions: http://seahorse.atlantia.sca.org/mailman/listinfo/atlantia
