Good Day,
While I don't usually post to the list, this particular subject has been a point of discussion in the SCA for as long as I can remember (30+ years) A past Atlantian Kingdom law was written to make one participate in all activities or the privilege of entering Crown Tourney was denied. Hence you will have an AOA, you will attended 6 non-fighting and 6 fighting events in the last year. It did not work. I may have the numbers wrong, but long story short; you can not dictate, mandate, or legislate a person's passion for art or service. It does not matter if that passion is a gentle or violent art.
Hopefully each person who participates in the SCA has a focus that brings them joy. Since it brings us joy, we want to share that passion and joy with others. We need to accept that not all persons will have an appreciation of our focus and passion.
Many Laurels are Knights. Most did not become Laurels first. It does not mean that it is easier to become a knight. It takes more physical space than most arts. It requires at least 2 participants. Due to safety considerations, a support staff is necessary. Most martial arts produce sound which attracts attention from those passing by. It is unusual art and not practiced by as large a percentage of the population as other arts. It all makes SCA martial arts more visible. Also, it makes me a little green-eyed.
The gentler arts make our world beautiful and speak to the soul. They move us. What moves me may not move another. However, I won't ask you to refrain from your passion. I will ask that you practice your art in a way that respects my art. That being said. The debate will continue on how do we respect each art and practice them in a way that allows all to have their day.
I would like to ask that all fighters take the time to look at the displays at KASF. Ask questions and appreciate the time and effort that goes into other art forms, How well is the Armour articulated? Look at how the banners are constructed. See and appreciate how even and uniform the stitches are on the embroidery. I also ask those who are not going to be on the lyst field to respect the choice of those who will be there.
Ysar
Who gets a little green-eyed from the martial arts but glows bright kelly green from some other art forms.
Love. Trust. Honor. All else in life pales.
