This recent thread brings to mind a conversation several local parents
were having recently. We were talking about supervising of children at
events and sharing that responsibility between several families. They
had recently had an experience where their kids were playing and
someone else just dropped their kids off and disappeared!
As parents, it is our responsibility to either be supervising our young
children or seeing that another specific responsible person is. I'm not
saying they have to be chained to your ankle the whole time, you should
be in the vicinity. If you know you are going to be uninterruptably
busy, whether that be at court, on the field, or in the kitchen, you
should have someone to watch your kids AND your kids should know that
THAT is the person they should come to if they need something. Yes, in
the case of a real emergency, the parents should be interrupted, but
the responsible person supervising the child can make that
determination. In this manner, the child has someone who can attend to
his/her needs as well as hopefully keep them safe, the parent can do
what it is they are there to do, and the rest of the folks can relax
and enjoy the event.
