[MR] Society Notice

he he. sounds familiar. as a conceal carry permit holder for 15 years i
love running into the anti-gun types. ive had people say "well logan your
not a small guy and you know how to box, why do you carry a gun?". knowing
how to box wont do you a lot of good against four nut jobs with bad
intentions or one large bear thats hungry. people get confused and
irrational around guns but dont see a guy with a book of matches and fear
him as an arsonist. its odd.

anyway, we certainly dont need any of us drawing our sidearms or our backup
weapons in the case of someone caught being predatory towards a man, a
woman, or a child. im sure the line would form very quickly to "help
restrain" the perp. when it does im calling precedence and getting as close
to the front as i can until the police arrive. there is a lot a good old
fashioned passionate crack to the teeth can get across to someone.
fortunately we dont have to witness the same kind of behavior at sca events
as you will see at a public pool (anyone know what "sharking" is?). we know
it happens and hopefully people will feel safer and start reporting it so
that all of this kind of behavior can be snuffed.

Isolda's made some good points about technicalities of carrying,
particularly with regard to the frequency with which SCA events are held in
"Gun-Free" (blech) areas. However, even in no-steel zones, I suspect a bunch
of SCA fighters with chair-and table-legs would be sufficient for anything
short of a Beslan scenario.

Rather than make it mandatory that youth-activity people get CHPs, I would
suggest that it might be a money-saver to let a CHP serve as proof of an
existing-and-current background check. For example, I've already spent the
$50 for a Virginia CHP (gotta renew this summer), and the $20 for a PA
permit (don't need to renew, again, we have reciprocity now).

I've found that permits and whatnot provide for some amusing repartee, with
people of a certain temperament. These folk, when they find out that I have
everything from a 14th C hande-gonne [ObPeriodReference], up to an Evil
Black Rifle(tm) say something like,

"It makes me uncomfortable to know that I'm in the presence of a Gun Nut",
or words to that effect.

My response usually leaves them crosseyed.

"Well, I'm not necessarily comfortable around YOU. How do I know you're not
a psycho?"

"But-but-but, I'n not."

"Really? How many background checks have you passed in the last 10-12
years?"

"None -- I don't do any of that government stuff..."

[add evil grin as appropriate] "Oh, really? You DON'T have proof that you're
reasonably law-abiding and mentally stable? In the past 12 years, _I_'ve
passed [counting on fingers] somewhere between twenty-five, and thirty
background checks. So there. Nyah."

It's fun, watching their heads explode.
