I agree with my fellow "Rencester alumni peer" on this, and place myself 
with her in the "consult the candidate" camp even though my own request 
was the direct opposite of hers. I asked for (and got) a writ for a future 
event, mostly because it would give everyone time to plan for things, 
most notably travel from out of Kingdom: friends came in from AEthelmearc, 
the East and Drachenwald. Had I not gone the "writ" route, either my 
friends would not have been there for my elevation or their presence would 
have given the game away; surprising me with the writ was the best way in 
my case.

So I join in the chorus of those who say: discreetly check with the 
candidate (heck, ask them up front, weill in advance of any chance og 
them getting elevated!), and their wishes should be carried out if at all 
possible.
