I think the questions about purpose have already been
adequately addressed, but one part of your question
may need some clarification as it took me awhile to
figure it out and others may likewise be confused   :)

If using a yahoo mail account (and possibly other
accounts), one needs to select "Reply to Everyone"
otherwise the response only goes to the original
poster and not to the list.   Great if that is the
intention, not so great if it isn't.   Also, I try to
delete the original poster's email address so they are
not receiving a duplicate email.
