I should hope (although I may be living in a Utopia-Dreamworld here) that
any pointy-hat worth their snuff would not be mortally offended if you did
not bow/curtsey in a non-formal environment. All this accomplishes is
alienating one of our best resources - new blood. ;)
Being called before court, to the Royal/Baronial pavillion, or to the high
table at feast are times when even the greenest newbie can probally figure
out that a simple bow or curtsey is appropriate. Knowing that you're a
newbie, even if you *were* called into a formal situation and neglected to
show reverence, I should hope that they wouldn't be terribly offended.
Hopefully someone In The Know would give the newbie a quick rundown of what
to do.... but if not, it's OK, too. We all make mistakes - especially when
we're thrust into a new situation.
I'll admit - I'm still pretty new to this whole thing, so my skills are
rusty at best. But for me, the best way to learn "unwritten rules" is to
place yourself in situations where you will be able to observe, ask
questions, and learn. I've volunteered to retain for our Baroness a few
times, and each time I've learned some new names, new faces, and got a bit
more of a who's who in the area. It's been an invaluable resource for me,
and I've enjoyed contributing to the Barony. (Plus, the company is
fantabulous. *grin*)
Just my .05,
